European Food Safety Authority (EFSA)
The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) is an agency of the European Union set up in 2002 to serve as an impartial source of scientific advice to risk managers and to communicate on risks associated with the food chain. We provide the scientific basis for laws and regulations to protect European consumers from food-related risks – from farm to fork. A key area of our work involves regulated products: food and feed-related products requiring a scientific assessment to evaluate their safety before risk managers can authorise them for the EU market. Regulated products include, for example, novel foods, substances used in food and feed (such as additives, enzymes, flavourings and nutrient sources), food-related processes, and processing aids. We carry out the safety assessments of such products to support EU risk managers in their decision-making about marketing authorisation. Our role also involves evaluating the scientific substantiation of health claims. Applicants – meaning organisations or companies looking to introduce these substances or products to the market – must provide evidence to prove they are safe or, in the case of health claims, that these are backed by sound science. To this end, at EFSA we also provide scientific and administrative guidance to applicants, guiding them in understanding the requirements, procedures and scientific data necessary to prepare dossiers that are complete and aligned with EU food safety regulations. We provide our guidance and support through various initiatives, including tailored services for small and medium-sized enterprises. Come visit our stand to learn more about our support initiatives for applicants in areas related to novel proteins!
